Welcome to The Fumbling Forager.
This site is all about learning from the plants around us with care, curiosity, and a sense of connection.
Hi there!
I’m Sabrina, a journalist, author, and forager with a deep-rooted respect for the plants that grow around us.
I’ve spent more than 30 years in media, most recently as an agricultural reporter covering policy and global food systems. I’m also a member of United Plant Savers and currently serve as the chapter coordinator for the Red River Valley (ND/MN) chapter of Herbalists Without Borders.
My interest in herbalism began more than three decades ago, first nurtured by my grandmother and a stack of well-worn library books. (Yes, I still remember exactly where to find the 581s on the shelf.) In 2024, I decided to deepen that knowledge with formal training in modern herbalism and that journey led me to community-rooted groups like HWB and projects like this field guide.
Today, I’m focused on helping others connect to plants through observation, education, and a little bit of humility. I live with my husband and our saucy cat Rosie in Fargo, North Dakota, where we enjoy quiet evenings, prairie walks, and slow-living values. We’re proud parents to two grown kids — one on each coast.
The Fumbling Forager grew from my love of learning and the belief that you don’t have to be an expert to engage with the natural world, just curious, respectful, and open to guidance (from both humans and plants).
Thanks for being here.

What I Believe
I believe foraging should be sustainable, respectful, and fun. It’s about connecting with nature, and learning from it.
My Approach
I focus on ethical foraging practices, highlighting plants that are easy to identify and harvest responsibly. My aim is to inspire confidence and curiosity in fellow foragers.
